dc.description.abstract | The main objective of this study is to provide biology teachers with a manual including fifteen fieldwork activities specific to the resources, flora and fauna found in Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Reserve and Sustainable Development Centre. The teacher’s manual devised in accordance of the biology syllabus, targets a variety of age groups and is divided into three main sections depending on observable seasonal changes. The idea of cross-linking biology with other subjects is also outlined in the manual. The content is structured in such a way to support teachers when planning and managing out-of-class activities. Besides outlining the principles of hands on learning, constructivism and inquiry based learning; emphasis is given on the benefits of out-of-class activities which can be referred to as being a branch of environmental education. The latter can be tackled through three different perspectives mainly education about, in and for the environment. The benefits of long stay residential fieldtrips are also discussed considering that the manual can cater for either day or residential visits, due to the fact that Xrobb l-Għaġin offers the facility of a hostel. The manual was evaluated by ten professional teachers and amended according to the suggestions and recommendations for future plans received. | en_GB |
