Abstract: This study aims at investigating how involuntary semantic memories are related to young Maltese adults’ life meaning, and the potential these memories have in generating a related counselling intervention. Involuntary semantic memories are memories of a semantic nature which come to present consciousness in an involuntary manner. The study aims at representing the experiences of involuntary semantic memories of five Maltese individuals, two males and three females aged between 24 and 34. Participants comprised of former clients of counselling, recruited on a voluntary basis. After defining involuntary semantic memories, early adulthood and life meaning, the study looks at participants’ experiences of involuntary semantic memories through data gathered in a two week journal writing exercise and a narrative interview that was held with each participant. As a methodological approach, narrative analysis is used to help identify the potential themes and subjective meaning of the abovementioned experiences, through the creation of narratives based on each participant’s contributions. From the data analysis, various involuntary semantic memories led to episodic memories which tied to participants’ present stance in life, concerns and unresolved issues; experiences where emotions still resonated strongly. Awareness and reflection on involuntary semantic memories led to personal depth which reflected how these memories subjectively relate to young Maltese adults’ life meaning. This research accentuates the insightful reflection generated from these memories and their potential as counselling interventions. Recommendations for future research, promotion and training, policy and practice alongside reflections on key findings, limitations and ethical implications are also presented within this research.
