dc.description.abstractQuality education demands quality classroom assessment. Learning Stories (Carr, 1998a; 1998b; 2001) is a quality tool for Assessment for Learning. Learning Stories entails documenting and analysing learning on the basis of observations. Successful observation requires reflective, accountable practitioners who, through discussions, collaboration and cooperation with children, other practitioners and parents, are able to modify the programme and plan for extending individual learning. This study presents the findings of a case studies research, in one state kindergarten setting, in which Learning Stories were used as a means of documenting and assessing children’s achievements and learning dispositions. Individual portfolios of Learning Stories gathered over three months gave insights into participating children’s learner identities. Learning Stories were regularly shared with parents for their feedback and their perspectives on the documented learning. The research revealed the benefits of Learning Stories as a quality assessment tool: children perceived themselves as competent learners; parents appreciated the value of the learning process as well as the outcomes; the practitioner, gained familiarity with the tool and, through critical reflection reviewed planning accordingly. The inclusion of Learning Stories into local early childhood settings necessitates due considerations to the current local contexts and culture.en_GB
