Abstract: | This research study investigates the different methods teachers use in the delivery of English Creative Writing lessons. The study focuses on the way teachers help their students become confident writers in English. There is significant research evidence that children are not born creative writers, however creativity can be triggered or encouraged in each and every child even those who do not show excitement for writing (Gibson, 2008). In this light, the purpose of this study is to gain a perception into the way the creative aspect is established in Creative Writing lessons and reflected in both the teachers and their students’ attitudes. The study is a case study sample implemented in two Year Five classes in Malta; a Church school and a State school. Results were derived from a series of English Creative Writing observations to determine the methodology applied to conduct Creative Writing. A questionnaire was administered to the children in the sample to determine the children’s outlook towards Creative Writing lessons. Ultimately, interviews with the teachers helped provide a perspective into teachers’ personal impressions and opinions on Creative Writing Lessons. From the analysis of these results, I was able to identify aspects of Creative Writing lessons which focused mainly on the planning and use of structured sentences, while adopting a creative approach. Encouraging creative thinking as well as the use of varied media helped children come up with a formative and enriching writing experience. Once students gained enough confidence, they were able to come up with their own piece of work and establish a purpose for their writing. |
