Abstract: | The main contributions of the Mediterranean peoples to the control of disease and the alleviation of the sick have been: a the rise and development of the concept of hospital care and treatment; b the promotion of the organised teaching of medicine and surgery; c the adoption of practical measures for the preservation of public health on the supra-national plane; d the elucidation of the causes and means of transmission of infectious illnesses which led to the adequate control of communicable diseases. |
