Abstract: The islands of Malta and Gozo display a complex language situation involving Maltese and English as the main protagonists. Maltese, a language born out of Arabic, has gone through many changes throughout its history and has survived as the Modern Maltese variety we now speak. It is currently undergoing sometimes subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle changes, especially under the influence of English. At the same time, the English spoken in Malta has also developed and changed via the influence of Maltese, so that one can speak of a local variety, Malta-English. The language situation in Malta and relation between the two languages will be discussed in some detail in this essay.
