Abstract: Little information is available about whether Maltese consumers use the nutrition information on food labels. Due to the increasing rate of obesity the researchers felt the need to establish the effect of food labelling on the choice of snacks among teenagers and adult consumers. The nutrient content of locally available snacks was analysed. Comparisons of knowledge about food labels, the frequency of snack consumption and participation in physical activities were made between genders and Home Economics and non Home Economics Form four Junior Lyceum students. The current trends of popular snacks consumed and their implications on health were investigated. The health related knowledge transmitted to teenagers at the Home Economics Seminar Centre was also observed. Results indicated that food labels had a minor impact on students' snack choices compared to other influential factors. Snacks with a high sugar, fat and sodium content were popular among teenagers. Home Economics students and females were more knowledgeable about health, but unhealthy snacks were still consumed, although less frequently. Findings revealed that the total population of non Home Economics students and males were more physically active but weekly spent a greater proportion of time on sedentary activities. Although adult consumers consulted food labels, unhealthy varieties were still purchased. The informative session increased awareness and the correct interpretation of food labels but unhealthy snacks were still consumed. Although Home Economics influenced student's snack choice, overall this study indicates the need for increased education about the importance of food labels among a wider spectrum of individuals.
