Abstract: This study explores creativity and autonomy within Design and Technology based on the hypothesis that the design and make is a learning tool utilized by the teacher to facilitate and enhance creativity in classroom activities encouraging the students to become autonomous. This stipulation was assessed within a school-based study of five Form 4 classes during a series of lessons in a natural setting. Data was collected through the technique of observer-as-participant by utilizing non-interventional observations which were reinforced by photos and interviews composed of open-ended questions. The study provided some evidence that the design and make serves as a learning tool towards promoting creativity, however just like any other tool it must be utilized appropriately and the role of the teacher to facilitate and develop the potential of their students' creativity and autonomy is crucial. The role of the workshop technician to assist the teacher and learners also emerged to be essential, yet it still entails further examination. The study also reports that the finished project becomes the pride of every pupil and it also boosts their self-esteem since it produces a sense of ownership among all pupils who eventually stamp their identity on their work. Analysis of data has also revealed that various factors hinder creativity and autonomy and these inhibitors appear to be a dilemma for both teachers' teaching and for pupils' learning. It also became evident that a de-motivated teacher with an authoritarian approach can impede creativity and autonomy. Consequently the finished artefact will lack creativity, originality and value.
