Abstract: The general consensus amongst Maltese civilians is that the Archipelago is relatively safe from any form of natural hazards. However, when considering Malta's geographical location within the Mediterranean, which is a tectonically active region, it is being suggested that a system of management practices for mitigation and preparedness for possible future earthquake scenarios should be developed using a centralised GIS application.The purpose of this thesis is therefore to develop a GIS database representing the geophysical activity experienced by the Maltese Archipelago; with the intent of adopting it within the Department of Civil Protection and Planning. This information can be used to help mitigate the hazards of geological phenomena, thus providing an insight for Emergency Services and Local Authorities on how they could improve their preparation methods in such disasters. From the findings of this study, which are identified in the maps developed, the geophysical active sites of the Archipelago are scattered throughout. Due to the nature of the bathymetry and plate tectonics surrounding the Archipelago we must perceive the vulnerability or risk we face as an island state for either natural or even anthropogenic disasters. Hence the importance of the development of a GIS infrastructure to support the Comprehensive Emergency Management scheme in aid of the Department of Civil Protection and Planning.
