Abstract: | This study is intended to achieve three main objectives. Firstly, the research aims to provide a detailed analysis of some eighteenth century fine bookbindings housed at the National Library of Malta (NLM). What is included in the research is only a fraction of what exists at the NLM, yet it features some of the most remarkable examples. These bindings once belonged to wealthy and powerful members of the Order of St John and these fine examples therefore shed light on the valuable connections that the Order had with major artistic centres in Europe and how they strived to acquire only that which was of superior quality. Secondly, the study is meant to highlight the main decorative elements of leather and non-leather bindings and show how these reflect the preferred styles of the period. This makes it possible to compare bindings in our local collection with those which are housed in European libraries and archives. The decorative details on bindings emphasise the important role of books within the decorative arts. This leads to my third objective, which is to stress the overall value of the book, especially as a unique work of art. This study should be considered as another step towards giving books in local libraries and archives the distinction they deserve. |
