Issue Date: 2014
Abstract: In this study the intention was to gather more knowledge on the lived experiences of women with a profile of dyslexia in conjunction with the societal perceptions that they experience. Semi-structured interviews were used to delve into the thoughts and feelings of six participants. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Five superordinate themes emerged: “Societal Perceptions”, “Standing up and Pushing Harder”, “Self- Acceptance”, “Concept of the Self”, and “Support”. The women’s stories largely show that societal perception has an impact on the lives of individuals with a profile of dyslexia. The effects vary from person to person but commonalities emerged from the participants’ shared experiences. The similarities and differences between these experiences are discussed in relation to the existing literature on dyslexia.
