The objective of this qualitative study is to explore the process of identity construction on social networks undertaken by Maltese emerging adults. In relation to this, strategies for self-presentation, impression management and self-disclosure are also identified. The end result is to obtain an understanding of how one virtually constructs a self image on social networks, and what contributors reinforce this procedure. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews, whereby six individuals, three of each gender, were selected. Several conceptual categories emerged from the interviews, providing evidence for contrary methods of self-presentation. The research concludes with a discussion of the various methods chosen for online identity construction, together with profile management and social network characteristics. Furthermore, recommendations will highlight the importance of privacy and the precautions necessary to carry out safe identity construction on social networks.en_GB
