Technological advances in the field of Information and Communication technology have brought about an increase in the need to mediate knowledge. Learning and education have been evolving constantly to accommodate the pervasive nature of technology and the Internet. E-learning platforms and learning management systems have been developing and evolving over the years shifting from simple monolithic frameworks, dealing with the essentials of course management, design and delivery, to systems which involve the learners more actively, employing more intelligence and involving smart services, stimulating motivation rather than leaving the learner passive. Emerging trends in the fusion between education and technology are indeed showing that modern-day learners are requesting more informality and flexibility in their own educational process; a process which needs to be lifelong and applicable to real industry & academic needs. A number of projects are thus, in conjunction with e-learning, introducing the concept of augmented reality or virtual world environments. Platforms making use of this type of innovative technology have in fact been found to yield a more flexible and robust learning system which offers enhanced personalization and dynamicity in the presentation of information using an orchestration of various functionalities using service-oriented architectures. This paper discusses possible research in the ambit of the cultural heritage domain targeting the section of the adult community, who prefer to be active and participative in their own learning constructs. Such objects are represented virtually, in a spirit of sharing of knowledge resources and collaboration, bridging the gap between the information providers within the heritage scene, the information technology providers and other stakeholders involved, namely members of the community.en_GB
