Abstract: | This present study is a qualitative approach to explore the experiences of professionals working therapeutically with offenders. The sample consisted of five participants with a range of experience working in custodial and non-custodial locations. The research tool selected to obtain rich data was semi-structured interviews and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The results that emerged indicate that professionals working therapeutically are affected by a number of factors ranging from the therapeutic space to interacting with and in the system. The participants experienced a number of stressors which tended to lead to burnout. During these stressful periods the professionals used a number of coping styles. This research also explored the risk factors and perceptions encountered while working in this unique field. The way they empathize with offenders emerged together with ethical dilemmas and the approach they take to develop therapeutic relationships. Participants also explained the affects of working with offenders and concluded with advice to aspiring professionals. |
