Abstract: Teaching is not assumed, by many individuals, to be an occupation which poses a lot of hazards and risks (Rotin, 2004). However, the Home Economics laboratory is filled with potential hazards which can lead to harm if the teacher does not have the necessary knowledge to lower the risks. The aim of this study was to explore the awareness and attitudes of Home Economics teachers towards the importance of Health and Safety, especially in the Home Economics laboratory. Data was collected through both quantitative and qualitative methods. Questionnaires were distributed to Home Economics secondary school teachers who work in different educational sectors. Furthermore, five interviews were conducted with a sub-sample of Home Economics teachers in order to get indepth information and validate the quantitative data. Moreover, an interview with the Home Economics Education Officer was carried out to find out how Health and Safety procedures are implemented in the Home Economics laboratory and to investigate how Home Economics teachers are kept updated with the latest information about Health and Safety practices. This study revealed that most Home Economics teachers are aware of Health and Safety legislation and procedures and they hold a positive attitude towards this concept. However, teachers need to be further instructed in First Aid and Fire Fighting. Moreover, the evidence suggests that further emphasis should be made to inform teachers about the correct procedures that must be followed when evacuating students with a disability.
