Abstract: | This research analyses the phenomenon of wayfinding through the environment, by examining a wayshowing project which would be implemented in the environs of Malta’s Capital City, Valletta. Initially, the research focuses on the main components which are part of any wayfinding project, underlining the vital factors which are part of the process. This investigation is informed by and sheds light on theories coined by professionals within the industry, such as Per Mollerup, Kevin Lynch & Paul Mijksenaar. The study also delves into the philosophical aspect of understanding meaning, as this is at the core of understanding communicative messages within an environment, which in return supports an effective wayshowing system. The project also identifies the necessary systems which make up a comprehensive wayshowing strategy that would work in a given environment. Interviews were conducted to further support the study and to outline specific details pertaining to the wayshowing project. Environment surveying was also done, to thus explore the environment physically on site. This investigation also attempts to outline alternative wayshowing hardware that would function in the context of Valletta. |
