Abstract: Starting with the 2007 cohort (2007 syllabus), the programming language proscribed in the MATSEC AM Computing syllabus has been changed from a purely procedural/Imperative one (Pascal) to a primarily Object-Oriented one (Java). This study aims to investigate the challenges encountered by both students and teachers in the changeover from the Imperative to the Object-Oriented paradigm, and in particular how both teachers and students were affected by this change. What were the teachers' greatest challenges when they had to learn an Object-Oriented language and teach it after teaching an Imperative paradigm for a number of years? What has proven to be the most challenging aspect to teach in an Object-Oriented language? Does a relationship exist between what the teachers found the most difficult to teacher, and what the students (preparing for the MATSEC AM in Computing) found the most difficult to grasp? What pedagogical changes were necessitated by this changeover? Do students think it was a positive change from Imperative to Object-Oriented paradigm, or would they have preferred to switch to the latter paradigm at a later stage in their education?
