Using the calculator to develop numeracy in secondary schools

Abstract

The main aim of this dissertation was to develop calculator activities for Form 1 and Form 2 students, which help them to develop numeracy. A set of teachers' notes were also developed to help teachers make the best out of the calculator activities. Some of these activities were pilot tested with a sample of students. These students were also asked to fill in a questionnaire about the activities. The set of students' activities and teachers' notes were also given to Head of Department of mathematics to give his feedback. Some interviews were also conducted with mathematics teachers. The results obtained from the pilot study and from the feedback given was critically analysed and employed for further improvement of the students' activities and the teachers' notes.
