Abstract: | Malta already holds a top spot within the international gaming industry, and this thesis aims to ensure that Malta remains at the forefront of this through an in-depth analysis of how cryptocurrencies and the blockchain can be used within the national context. This text delves into the challenges and opportunities surrounding cryptocurrencies and the blockchain within the context of Maltese law, specifically contract law and gaming law. It aims to bring to the fore a discussion on the possibilities of including decentralised storage of information in the sphere of public sector, as well as other possible applications. The thesis attempts to explore the misconceptions surrounding the ‘anonymity’ aspect of cryptocurrencies whilst also delving into the criminal aspect which is too often the first thought that comes to mind upon thinking about cryptocurrencies. It also provides an in-depth discussion on smart contracts and their possible usage across the Maltese landscape and their interplay with traditional contract law. |
