Abstract: Through a qualitative approach, this study aims to provide insight into how bedtime routines affect children between the ages of 4 and 8 years old. Exploring parental perceptions of bedtime routines in children was essential in order to obtain this data. Through semi-structured interviews, 7 parents gave their individual opinions and perceptions built upon their own lives. The data was analysed through thematic analysis and coded thoroughly via the constant comparative model. Four major underlying themes were presented: The benefits experienced, Attachment, Mum as a major role and Factors that help a bedtime routine; these were further divided into sub-themes. The final results confirm the importance of implementing bedtime routines and bedtime hygiene in order for it to be a successful or positive bedtime routine. Furthermore, the results also showed that the level of attachment and bonding between a child and their parent affects the bedtime routine. Overall, all the parents had a positive perception on the concept of bedtime routines and the effects it has upon their children. There is anticipation that this dissertation will make more parents aware of the positive effects of implementing a bedtime routine for their children as it can fundamentally enhance the quality of life for both the parents and the child related to different factors such as school and work performance, timing and mood. As our country becomes progressively heterogeneous, it is important to grasp an understanding of the various ways diversity may be reflected in family life.
