Abstract: This study explored how literate Maltese students at the University of Malta are about major depressive disorder (MDD). 152 male and female students from various faculties between the ages of 18 and 63 years old participated in this study. Data was collected using a selfdesigned online questionnaire and analysed with SPSS. The findings showed that most of the students had a good understanding of MDD. Results revealed that there were only slight differences between gender and age groups. However, there was a considerable difference between health-related and non-health-related courses. The findings highlighted the need for a focused effort of increasing awareness amongst males in non-health-related courses. Also, results showed that more awareness is required within the university and in Malta. The students recommended the use of social media, television programs, and formal education from a young age as means to increase awareness.
