Abstract: Body-image issues have increased worldwide over the last 30 years and do not only concern young people but affect people of all ages. Identifying the risk and protective factors of bodyimage disorders can serve to create awareness in its prevention and treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore how professionals in the field perceive the principal risk and protective factors behind body image disorders. Six interviews were conducted amongst professionals, and data was then analysed using a thematic analysis approach. Four main themes emerged from the analysis: 1) The conceptualization of Body-Image Disorders, 2) The Risk factors of Body-Image Disorders, 3) The Protective factors of Body-Image Disorders and 4) Treatment and Awareness strategies of Body-Image Disorders. These main themes are sub-divided into individual, societal and familial factors that all play an important role in the etiology and treatment of the condition. The findings also propose that it is imperative for treatment and preventative strategies to adopt a multidisciplinary approach.
