The teaching and learning of multiplication and division in Year 4 : a resource pack

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation was to create a resource pack consisting of worksheets, activities, games and ICT tasks to reinforce and supplement the material found in the Abacus 3 and 4 Schemes currently used in Year 4 state school classes. The handbook was designed after having evaluated the local syllabus as well as the relevant literature on multiplication and division. A sample of the resources was trialled out by four eight-year-old pupils of different abilities. This was done in order to evaluate the resources. The feedback obtained from the observations and interviews with the pupils guided us to make any necessary amendments. All the worksheets, activities, games and onscreen tasks were compiled in a practical handbook. The ICT tasks were also presented on a CD. We are confident that the resource pack will be a useful tool for Year 4 teachers when teaching the operations of multiplication and division.
