Abstract: Purple has an illustrious history compared to its companions in the colour spectrum. Reds, yellows, and browns were found in ochres and black and white easily made from charcoal and ash, as seen in prehistoric cave paintings. Later blue and green pigments were discovered by crushing minerals and gemstones, while purple had a surprising source: the sea, which made it even more laborious and costly to extract.
