Abstract: Purpose: The main aim of this dissertation is to identify the impact of terrorism on the aviation industry. This study analyses how Malta International Airport (MIA) reacts to the threat of terrorism, and to what extent the industry and client confidence are affected. Design: The study was mainly based on semi-structured interviews with Aviation Security Malta (AVSEC) being the regulator of the aviation industry, MIA officials within security controls and risk management departments and a number of local travel agents. Questionnaires were distributed both online and in person to the general public. Secondary research was undertaken about the subject. Findings: Results indicate that several security controls are in place at MIA, despite the general public’s doubts about their actual effectiveness and efficiency particularly in less sensitive areas. The entity has to strike the right balance between cost constraints and safety. Training plays a very important role in the implementation of controls and cost cutting exercises. The risk management and business continuity functions operate optimally. Malta has substantially benefitted from the shift of destinations struck by terrorism. Likewise, travel agents too had to adapt and find innovative ways to maintain or diversify their portfolios. Conclusions: Participants proposed the enhancement of security controls not only at the airport but also on a more national level. Respondents were unanimous about the need for more open communication and transparency between the regulator and the industry in general. Finally, they strongly advocated more proactive measures to reinforce Malta’s preparedness in case of acts of terror. Value: Owing to the very sensitive nature of the topic, there is a dearth of authoritative literature available. The study, hopefully, managed to shed more light on the subject. The findings though not exhaustive were quite revealing and stimulate further discussion.
