Abstract: The World Health Organisation has identified obesity as a significant public health problem in most developed countries. People add on weight for various reasons, mostly due to an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, emotional problems and also genetics which also play an important part. Behavioral modifications are an essential element of a weight loss plan. This study explores what approach the Maltese are following in order to lose weight and their perceptions of weight loss strategies. A questionnaire was the tool used to collect data about this issue. This questionnaire was distributed among adults, who were undergoing a weight loss program, asking them about their diet, lifestyle, exercise and their knowledge on the subject. From this study it was concluded that most people are fully aware about the importance of physical activity for weight loss, but unfortunately they base their nutritional knowledge on myths rather than on what the health authorities recommend. People think they are knowledgeable about the subject, but the questionnaire revealed otherwise. The main source of information of the respondents is the internet. People who need to lose excess body weight should do so safely and the best way is to seek the help of a professional.
