Celebrating 100 years of history : Magro Brothers

Abstract

This article commemorates the 100 year anniversary of one of the leading general merchants and food distributors in Gozo, the Magro Brothers . It tells the story of the company s origins from 1916 with founder Ganni Magro of Xewkija to the following generations in management between his sons; Manuel, Wigi & Guzeppi and eventually his grandsons; John and Michael. It maps out their steady expansion from being general merchants to explorers of new ventures such as cattle breeding, wholesale and retailing of food stuff and agricultural tools, imports and exports, and even real estate. This article also provides a good view on the socio-economic impact such companies have on their localities, i.e: expanding the job market, increasing the population and consumption rates in Gozo.
