The training of teachers requires the development of an approach which brings together theory and practice in a dialectical relationship. It is by reflecting on key educational themes and real classroom situations that teachers can understand and critically evaluate their own practice. In order to carry out that reflection, and in order to move away from a practice based on common sense and unexamined methods it is necessary for teachers, whether experienced or not, to engage in theory and in research data. The Faculty of Education has risen to the challenge of promotion reflective practitioners by addressing eight educational themes and by drawing on a variety of theoretical perspectives and original research projects in order to throw light on issues such as motivation, discipline, language, decision-making, assessment, curricula, gender and social class, and the relationship of these to educational practice in Malta. The readings therefore provide important insights and research data to prospective as well as experienced teachers, to educators generally, and to those scholars interested in comparative perspectives on schooling.
