Abstract: This study investigates children's career aspirations in relation to age, gender and the school they attend. It investigates the influences of the caregivers' aspirations on their children and family's income on the children's career ambitions. Research was held with Year 3 and Year 6 boys and girls of three different types of local schools, namely an Independent, a State and a Church school. Factors influencing career aspirations were examined through questionnaires to children and their caregivers, in addition to interviews to children. The findings suggest that children's career aspirations are shaped through experiences such as playing games, watching television and school. Caregivers and significant others are also sources of influence. Young children imagine themselves as workers, however, they find it difficult to distinguish between reality and fantasy, while older children tend to aspire for reachable occupations. A number of caregivers encourage social mobility and do not want their children to follow their careers. Gender stereotypical views have been found to be present. Children understand that women can do different jobs, however, girls opt for traditional female occupations, while most boys opt for male occupations. Slight differences emerged in children's career aspirations amongst children of different schools. There is no significant relationship between the caregivers' occupations, family income and the children's aspirations. The study recommends teachers to help children develop their self-concept, thus encourage decision-making and self-awareness. A gender neutral curriculum should be applied in schools to expose different occupations irrespective of gender.
