dc.description.abstract | In this article, Michael Cassar explains the role of the engineer William George Armstrong in the evolution of the warships of the Royal Navy during the second half of the 19th century. In 1846, William George Armstrong used water pressure to power a hydraulic dockside crane : it was a world first. Then, he sold armaments and ships all over the world, including Malta. After landing in Malta the guns were transported to the local Iron Ship Repairing Shop. | en_GB |
