Yachting is an ever growing industry along many coastal areas. When one stops to consider Malta's strategic location in the Mediterranean, one realises that it is perfectly placed in one of the busiest shipping lanes. It is hard to believe that the present yacht marina facilities barely cope with local demands, let alone with foreign visitors. Very limited research has been carried out on yacht marinas in Malta. The main purpose of this study is to explore into the potential for Malta to provide yacht marinas. This dissertation shall also attempt to observe the environmental, social and economic impacts which such marina developments may impose on the surrounding areas, and focus on maximising the positive ones and minimising the negatives. These come with proper planning and control, therefore looking into policy implementation, shall be another aspect of the study. Research findings show that Malta has great potential in the yachting industry. With the proper decisions, this potential may be exploited to its maximum and therefore lead to a successful industry.en_GB
