Abstract: The extensive use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by adolescents for leisure, entertainment and social interaction is making a great impact on their learning needs, requirements and expectations. Recent years have seen a considerable range of tools and programmes that support on-line and blended learning. One such type is the virtual learning environment which is a web-based information-rich learning environment. The methodology involves an experimental component in which a virtual learning environment is developed for Form 2 students for the topic of Algebra. Students have the possibility of engaging themselves in learning tasks and related discussions complementing classroom lessons. The main objectives of this dissertation are: How to best integrate the use of ICT with the learning of Algebra; gain an insight and therefore compare the interactions that happen in the classroom and on-line. This investigation adopts a blended research methodology employing both quantitative and qualitative research techniques to capitalise on the benefits of both. When creating e-learning content, the pedagogical approaches need to be evaluated so that the adopted pedagogy can be finely tuned to learners' different needs. Thus, the investigation also includes reflection on the process of using this technology-enhanced approach. Recommendations are given on how to improve such methodology and what needs to be done to implement them in our educational system.
