Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation, was to analyse the effectiveness of teaching the language arts through the use of Maltese nursery rhymes. We conducted a research on nursery rhymes and the influence that they can have on the children's learning. Based on this, we then prepared a set of fifteen lesson plans and the resources that accompany them. The mentioned lesson plans and resources were prepared by making use of the book Taqbiliet Maltin: Għall-Kbar u għaż-Żgħar (Mayl et al, 2010). In these lessons, we promoted the teaching of the language arts, through the use of nursery rhymes and aspects of literature that can be linked to them. A number of these lessons were conducted in year three Primary classrooms, and were evaluated by means of: interviews with the teachers who observed the lessons; questionnaires with the children who participated in the lessons; and personal reflections following each lesson. From this dissertation it was clear that both the teachers and the pupils enjoyed making use of Maltese nursery rhymes, and that the teaching of the language arts was done in a context and also in relation to other subjects.
