According to Giovanni Bonello, the British soldiers and sailors during the late Victorian area had a certain appetite for entertainment. The Britannia Circus, an innovative concept for entertainment, opened to the public by 1899. The building catered for theatre, vaudeville, circus shows and cinema, together with musical performances and dances, but it also proved popular for indoor sports, like boxing. But in 1919, almost a hundred years ago, the British authorities demolished the building to make way for the King George V Merchant Seamen's Memorial Hospital.en_GB
