| Abstract: | The clinical presentation, the pathological findings and the results of toxicological analysis of a case of poisoning with thallium are recorded in detail. The difficulties in clinical diagnosis are emphasised and discussed, as the neurological and psychiatric manifestations may be most bizarre and misleading, and as alopecia may not be apparent. Pointers that may suggest the possibility of thallium poisoning are mentioned. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry is a very sensitive and helpful technique in the detection of thallium in tissues and excreta and should be made more widely available as a laboratory service to clinicians. |
