dc.description.abstractThis informal paper has very much of a personal character. No originality is claimed for any views expressed, but no apology is offered for such views except where they may be rather hackneyed: some points are deliberately given somewhat dogmatic expression so that they may invite discussion and criticism. Where figures are presented, it is not because they denote particularly good results or because they compare at all favourably with the published results of the foremost specialists in biliary surgery. They are simply meant for my own use, to give me salutary warnings and allow me to take stock of what I have been doing in this particular field.en_GB
