Abstract: | The main aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which ICT, Computer Studies and Mathematics teachers use interactive whiteboards (IWBs). The study has also delved into teachers' views regarding the benefits and effectiveness of the IWB, the adopted teaching methodologies, the type of training that teachers expect to receive, as well as the limitations of such a tool. A questionnaire was administered to all teachers of the said three subjects of all state Secondary schools in Malta and Gozo. This study, which concerned one hundred and ninety-two teachers, showed that the frequency of use of IWBs is directly related to the subject being taught. This research revealed that this tool is mainly being used for projection purposes. Also the modality mostly addressed in class was that of visual learning. The most frequently cited perceived benefits and effects of IWBs were an increase in interactive teaching, students' ability to visualize content more easily on the screen and that students' level of understanding is enhanced when content is manipulated directly on the board. When asked to designate the expected type of training, teachers suggested an intensive training course to learn how to use the board in an interactive manner. The study highlighted factors which constrain IWBs' use, being limited access to IWBs at schools, wall mounted IWBs not being suitable for all users and that other teaching tools may be more effective. |
