Abstract: Paediatrics as a specialty in its own right - in the sense of a doctor who has specialized in the prevention and treatment of childhood ailments and then devoting his whole time and energy to their care - in this sense Paediatrics may be said to have started in Malta in the mid-1940's. At this time two qualified paediatricians returned to Malta after having completed about two years as Nuffield scholars for specialist training in the u.K. They found a mammoth task ahead, as evidenced for example by the high Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) shown in Fig 1.
