Abstract: The history of a University is, mainly, the record of its contribution to knowledge. It is against this intellectual background. that the history of the origin and growth of a University must be viewed in order that we may fully realize its social and cultural importance. This follows quite logically from the universally acknowledged conception of the functions of a University, which is no longer considered as a place where a certain degree of literary and scientific culture is imparted and prospective practitioners are trained in their respective professions, but the place where common knowledge is continually developing and increasing by the incessant efforts of Professors applying and extending their research to the several branches of learning. Productivity is the sign of vitality, and a University, which does not contribute its share to the advance of learning, is as good as dead.
