To serve and protect – Are newly appointed constables ready for the challenge?

Abstract

This research attempts to evaluate whether current training offered to new Maltese police officers matches the demands and expectations of contemporary policing. Current research suggests that training should support the policing philosophy adopted by the organisation (White & Escobar, 2008) and should meet the demands of the role of a police officer (Birzer, 2003). Interviews were carried out with administrators and educators at the Academy for Disciplined Forces (formerly the Police Academy). This was complimented by interviews with operational police officers from two different police stations. Findings suggest that although the Malta Police Force embraces a community policing model, this is not reflected in their training approach. Findings also indicate a preference towards a theoretical rather than a practical or applied mode of education. Participants argue that training provided does not match their real world requirements, hence relying on the job training and experiences.
