Abstract: The conventual church of the Knights of Malta was that of St. John in Valletta, the work of which began in 1573 under the planning of Girolamo Cassar. Hughes describes it as a “church with twin western towers surmounted by spires.” He feels that it is important to establish the origin of this feature since the style of this church was adopted by many architects later in the future.
