Abstract: This body of research investigated the concept of “Irrational Fear” and how it can be represented through illustration. The origins of fear were explored from an Evolutionary, Behaviorist and Psychoanalyst point of view, compared with more modern views. Whilst research was being done, the work of artists from different time periods was explored to see how they portray fear in their works, as well as to understand how fear can be used as a driving force behind a creative process. This dissertation explored artists such as Goya. His creation of the “Black Paintings” was fueled by the turmoil that surrounded him in Spain during the 1800s as well as the fear and depression instilled in him by remnants of the countless illnesses he faced. Salvador Dali, who although, like Goya created work inspired by his fears, didn’t suffer at the hands of his various phobias, but instead gained pleasure from them. Many of the objects that he feared, such as insects and the female body, were often included in his paintings. Artworks that represented fears and phobias such as those in John Vassos’ book, “Phobia” (1931) and the “scale up your fears” (2016) cockroach installation by Stickyline were also investigated to further scrutinize the process of representing fears and phobias through artistic visuals. This dissertation explored the ability to communicate moods, thoughts and feelings through illustration, while also taking into account Freud’s theory of “The Uncanny”. The subject matter of the illustrations was determined by the data retrieved thanks to a qualitative process based on questionnaires. Throughout the design process, different medias and concepts were explored in order to ensure that the final illustrations visualized the irrational fears in the most effective way. The final illustrations were then displayed in a public exhibition, where people could immerse themselves in the visuals that emit an “uncanny” mood.
