Abstract: | Miniature objects from Dikili Tash in East Macedonia (Greece) date mostly from the recent neolithic and comprise models of houses, furniture, ovens, vases, spoons, as well as anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines. Interpretation problems of these objects still remain open. Nevertheless, there do exist some indications concerning their function; these are either given by evidence about their origin, associations or context, or result from the study of the material; in the latter case they concern style, method of prehension, fidelity of the representation and decoration. The above mentioned points having been considered, it seems a unique way of interpretation should be avoided. We are, in fact, rather turning towards a solution consisting of multiple hypotheses showing different functions of various groups of miniature objects. There would be, therefore, no incompatibility with parallel uses for playing, for symbolic representation or, even, imagery of divinity, or for accomplishing magic or initiation rites. At the same time the manufacturers', owners', or, at least, users' identity would also vary. |
