| Abstract: | This chapter approaches early modern Valletta from a cultural history perspective. By ranging across themes such as the physical development of the city, its economy and population, its status as a convent‑city for the Hospitallers, and the role of audiences in creating perceptions of the city, this study emphasizes the dynamism of the early modern city beyond the label of ‘Renaissance town’. |
