Abstract: The World Trade Organisation and the European union are both key players in the formulation of trade deals. This study focuses on the relationship between the two and how one influenced the other throughout their development. From the different approaches to world trade, to the elements of protectionism within domestic markets. The main aspects reflected upon consist of the development of EU trade policy in relation to the WTO agenda of liberalizing trade, and the approaches pursued whether being bilateralism or multilateralism. Furthermore, the study will go a step further to analyse any connections this development might have with the elements of protectionism occurred through the EU trade policy.
