The effect of accession on Maltese import/export companies

Abstract

This dissertation was a research project carried out with the aim to delve deeper into the ins and outs of Maltese trade. It is focused particularly on Maltese import and export companies and their processes, with particular focus on the period before Malta joined the European Union in 2004 and the period after Malta became a European Union Member State. These two time periods can be referred to as pre-2004/pre-EU membership and post-2004/post EU membership. The aim of the research was to learn and focus on the methods and processes used in trade and to highlight the differences between the two periods. Additionally, the effect trade has had on the Maltese economy in general, and how joining the European Union has affected both Maltese trade and the economy as a whole are discussed. Besides focusing on economy and trade, reference has also been made to Maltese and European Union law in order to gain a clearer and more comprehensive picture of the matter at hand. To better illustrate the changes brought around by joining the European Union, statistics have been obtained and raw data has been transcribed into charts and tables. These were identified through research and the use of old publications and press releases, both from the European Community and from the Maltese Government at the time. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in the course of this study. Quantitative methods were used in order to obtain the data needed to create the statistical information like charts and graphs in order to statistically represent changes over time in the economy and Maltese GDP. On the other hand, qualitative methods were used in order to obtain theoretical information about processes and paperwork used pre-2004 and the methods used nowadays which facilitate trade. Several sources, both online and physical were used. Samples of the paperwork used pre-2004 and post-2004 are also available in this project. Overall it can be said, that joining the European Union has definitely streamlined imports and exports for Malta, making it a great deal easier and quicker. Simple every day tools such as technology has facilitated trade too. However, the European Union’s Single Market and no trade barriers are what make trade that much easier today. With the abolition of duties, traders are encouraged to import and export freely, rather than having to find ways to produce goods locally, thus increasing competition and quality, and improving choices and prices for the consumer in the long run. Obstacles and hurdles were met when Malta was joining the European Union, but these were eventually overcome and as a result, Malta went on to officially join the European Union in 2004 and has benefited from the Single Market ever since. Through this research project, one can see the hurdles Maltese companies have had to overcome, to reach where we are today.
