Abstract: As part of the special libraries category, the goal of religious libraries is to provide access to specialised collections in order to support their larger community. Special library literature, especially in-depth case-studies on religious libraries, seems to be limited within both international and local contexts. One contributing factor could be a lack of library visibility and awareness on their existence and value. In order to address such issues, a qualitative case-study was carried out. The research aim was to investigate the nature and value of St Thomas of Villanova Library, located in St Mark’s Priory, Rabat, Malta. This library was analysed from multiple perspectives in order to provide a realistic and holistic representation of it. Supported by an interview with Prior Fr Cortis and relevant literature, this analysis highlighted the library’s roles and significance within different contexts, including the Augustinian Order. Furthermore, the library’s development, its collections and management-related issues were examined. Lastly, specific examples from the library’s old book collections, dating back to the 1400s, showcased various unique features, such as decorated leather bindings. In this way, the value of St Thomas of Villanova Library was further highlighted. Finally, the study concluded that limited human and financial resources are two main overarching issues that affect other library tasks. Thus, prioritisation of tasks is essential. Other recommendations highlight the importance of digital preservation and online access, among others. Ultimately, this study encourages further research on religious libraries. It also raises awareness on their nature and value. Indeed, within the Augustinian Order, St Thomas of Villanova Library supports learning and the preservation of its collections. In the wider context, this study hopes to open up the eyes of the public about these libraries’ hidden treasures which are worthy to appreciated as a vital component of our Maltese book heritage.
