Abstract: Energy efficiency is a concept used to define how energy use can be minimised to reduce energy losses. It is important for energy efficient measures to be implemented in several sectors, such as the residential sector to reduce the net energy consumption. The aim of this dissertation is to try to understand how the public views energy efficient measures and whether they perceive them as an asset or as an obstacle. The dissertation will also try to comprehend whether financial costs play an important role when investing in energy efficient technologies such as photovoltaic cells and solar water heaters. The focus of this study is on energy efficient technologies as the potential for energy saving is on the rise due to a higher consumption of energy. The research findings show that the participants are aware of environmental labels, however they would require more information from them to make an informed decision when investing in efficient appliances. The findings show that the respondents do not comprehend the importance of using an energy performance certificate. From the research gathered, efficiency rating of an appliance and cost-effectiveness of a technology are considered more important than price. However, the research shows that price is taken into consideration when choosing an efficient technology. The findings show that the Maltese population perceive photovoltaic cells as the most cost-effective energy efficient technology. This is mainly due to the increase in popularity over the years. One can conclude that the Maltese population is aware of such technologies and their popularity would increase if there is more knowledge available. It is also clear that awareness can be spread using social media as a way of informing the public effectively.
