Abstract: | The Natura 2000 network is the largest coordinated network of protected areas worldwide. In the Maltese Islands, Natura 2000 sites occupy 13.5% of land area. While the network focuses on conservation, it also seeks to satisfy the local community’s economic and social needs. This study sought to explore the knowledge and perceptions of local communities of Natura 2000 sites. A semi-systematic review of relevant literature was first conducted to document the conclusions of relevant studies conducted across Europe. This highlighted several recurring themes. The study then analysed the perceptions of residents of Dingli, Pembroke, and Qrendi pertaining to three Natura 2000 sites in the respective localities using a survey, administered in person within the localities and online. Results obtained were analysed using NVIVO and SPSS. Results show that there is some knowledge of and a generally positive attitude towards biodiversity and protected areas; however, misconceptions were also evident. There was some interest in being involved in protected area management; however, this was found to vary in relation to demographic variables. The findings of this study suggest that there is scope for a more participatory approach to management of Natura 2000 sites. |
