The Council of Europe Cultural Routes were created in order to highlight the common cultural heritage of all Europeans. The project was launched in 1987 by the Council for Cultural Cooperation (CDCC), following the Parliamentary Assembly's proposal to revive the famous routes along which innumerable pilgrims travelled in the Middle Ages from all over Europe to Santiago de Compostela. This mass movement gave the pilgrims a feeling of belonging to a family of nations, each distinct from the others, but all sharing the same basic values and linked by a common civilisation.en_GB
